elevations. i'll have a look at what you can expect for your friday and the weekend coming up. good morning sal. good morning. right now 2:37. traffic looks good crossing 880 as you drive over to 101. should be a nice drive but it's a little bit wet from the overnight rain. 680 traffic looks good. 5 o o'clock. let's go back to the desk. well, that sound may have jolted you out of bed overnight, the sound of hail. we took this video of marble sized hail falling in the east bay, you can see large sections of the road were definitely iced over. the sound of thunder and some lightning causing a restless night for many in the bay area. drivers facing the slick roads this morning. ktvu's tara moriarty is out there on 880 where the road

opened just a little while ago. >> reporter: we're at 880 and traffic is back to normal but between the hours of 2 and 4:00 this morning there were major back ups. officials say the rain slicked road play add big factor in the crash. the chp says it appears the person driving the white saturn slammed into the median at 2:00 this morning. and the driver of the suv came along and hit the saturn. the driver of the saturn was outside his car. he sudden a massive head injury and was transported to the hospital. he is in critical condition. there are several traffic breaks for two hours but everything is back to normal. as you can see the truck scared me just a little bit. we're close to the freeway. it is important to slow down as you drive toward the roadways this morning because there was a lot of overnight rain and it is continuing in parts. you want to make sure you go

maybe just under the speed limit however safe you feel. live from fremont i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. police in antioch investigating a deadly overnight shooting. a 44-year-old man was shot in front of a home on on west 18 18th street. it happened about 7:30 last night. he managed to take himself to a hospital but he later died. so far no arrests have been made. if you have any information about this case contact the police. in other news, a large san francisco house fire may have been sparked by renovations that were underway at that house. about 7:00 last night, look at the flames shooting out of the roof of the home on fernwood drive. this is near st. francis wood not far from san francisco statement university. this house had been vacant for years after the death of its owner. a contractor bought the house and then resumed renovations a few weeks ago. >> this house was on fire like

i've never seen before. it was the most frightening thing i've ever seen. it was unbelievable how hot and bright it was. >> neighbors are speculating the fire may have been started with the roof repairs. the home next to it was damaged as well. one firefighter was slightly hurt. there's a warning for parents in fremont this morning. police are on the look out for a suspicious man who they say approached a female student. police say the student from kennedy high school told them that during the past month the man has offered her a ride 5 different times. the latest incident happened wednesday near briar elementary school. the man was last seen in a suburban like suv with a roof rack. anyone with information is asked to call police. time is 5:04 with the u.s. military now punishing some u.s. navy seals. accusing them of giving secret information o to a popular video game maker. telling us about the local

connection and what information was revealed is claudine wong. >> reporter: this is the company that made the game, and apparently paid these navy seals for help in designing medal of honor war fighter. now, this game was just released last month by electronic arts, the company said in a press release that it was written by actual u.s. tier one operators while deployed overseas to provide players a view into globally recognized threats. involved in the most sensitive of operations and the seven navy seals who have been punished are a part of seal team 6 which is that command unit based in virginia, which conducted the operation against bin laden. all seven have been reprimanded and they forfeited half their pay for two months for helping

electronic months. and in facts the punishment and the navy is not saying a lot but the deputy commander of the naval academy issued a statement we do not tolerate deviations from policies that we have and what we do in the united states navy. he went on to say that the punishments this week send a clear message throughout our force that we are and will be held to a high standard of accountability. again, the video game was made by electronic arts. what they are concerned about is that these navy seals did not ask permission before they talked to the video game company about this video game and they may have shown them sensitive combat weapons to help them make the game more realistic. apparently the investigation is being continued and seals are being investigated for possible discussions they had. the united states navy concerned about any sensitive information that may be getting out. live here in redwood city claudine wong ktvu channel 2

news. in just a couple of hours, president obama will address the nation this morning for the first time since being reelected. the president will speak from the white house at 10:05 our time this morning. coming up for you the at 5:15, the message the president is expected to give congress about how to avoid the fiscal cliff. also this morning, republican house speaker john boehner will hold his own news conference. he's expected to tell us the republican position on avoiding the fiscal cliff. boehner says he's the most reasonable guy in washington and believes he can find common ground with the president. they are still counting votes in florida from tuesday's election, but mitt romney's campaign advisor says president obama are will win the state. the romney campaign in florida says it only expects the president's lead in the state to grow as more ballots are counted. president obama of course won

the election without florida's 29 electoral votes. time 5:07. we have rain and wet roads and sal we have crashes. i don't think you're going to have friday light today. >> i'm still hoping but i think you might be right dave and pam. you should be especially careful on your way to work today. a ktvu photographer actually took some video of someone driving in the rain and this photographer, our photographer was driving out actually early, pounding rain on 880 a few hours ago. chp warns there are shrieky slick -- slick highways. there was hail earlier the in the east bay. be careful there could be pooling water especially near the off ramps. let's go to live pictures right now. you can see interstate 80 westbound, it looks pretty good. heading out to the mcarthur maze, and no problems on the bridge getting into van. at the toll -- san francisco.

at the toll plaza we're looking at a light delay. and san jose, we've been looking at the santa clara valley, pretty good drive so far. 5:08. let's go to rosemary. we are going to be damp for today, active weather remaining in the forecast. a look at the satellite radar. we had a pretty good band of rain and thunderstorms cross over the area in the overnight hours. as sal mentioned the puddles still along the highway. take it easy out there this morning. could be hazardous at times. morgan hill, highway 101 at this hour, the rain is falling pretty good, even had the possibility of some heavier rain moving through right about to morgan hill. looks like 5:29 and 5:35 tracking a thunderstorm. looks like it has fallen apart somewhat but light to moderate rain falling here in the next 15 minutes or so. you'll continue to see this as

it pushing off to the east. we are going to remain unstable, that means a mix of sun and clouds and thunderstorms remaining in the forecast. here about 8:00 or so, santa cruz into the valley we may see another line of rain move through. in the afternoon we're mainly dry but we're going to remain with the possibility of scattered showers in the forecast all day. and it's a cool start this morning. 35 degrees. 45 in hayward, 46 san jose. you may need that heavy jacket. upper 50s, low 60s in the forecast for your afternoon, so we'll be slightly cooler than yesterday. your extended forecast with your weekend in vehicles a chilly start to the morning -- view, a chill start to the morning. 30s in the early parts of the day. and our next chance of rain arrives on tuesday. 5:10, happening right now, we're going to give you a live look at highway 50 in myers. they have know out there pam. snow has been coming down on and off for the past several

time 5:14, a daring robbery in london. the robbers are riding motorcycles through a shopping center in london. shoppers had to jump out of their way. there are six crooks here.

they have bats and axes and escaped on their motorcycles and robbed a jewelry store. police in london found the motorcycles, they were abandoned a couple l l -- miles away but still the robbers are on the loose. growing privacy concerns back home, if you're a transit rider and use clip it cards. they are continuing a type of revised policy. clipper cards keep your information for seven years but the mtc is looking to reduce that length of time. police have subpoenaed records several times in three years. the race for district 7 supervisor is too close to call. according to the city's department of elections fx crowley is ahead of normane by

100 votes. there are 72,000 ballots to be canceled and the winner will replace sean ellsbo. season on mitt romney's campaign mistakenly published a victory web site. romney did not win but you'd never know it from this web site briefly published on election night. it featured pages dedicated to the infalling ration. and allie rasmus is in our -- allison burns is in the washington dc news room with the message today. >> president obama made clear on the campaign trail the fiscal cliff was not going to happen. today he makes his first post election speech from the white house outlining how he plans to avoid it. now, the president has only been back at the white house

for one full day, but on that day, congressional budget analysts issued a dire warning. they said the fiscal cliff spending cuts and tax increases that kick in at the end of this year would push the economy into another recession. on the campaign trail the president made clear he wants a deal that includes tax reforms and new incentives for businesses that keep jobs in the united states, but he also wants tax increases on wealthier americans, something republicans say they will refuse to consider. reporting live from washington dc, allison byrnes ktvu channel 2 news. a penalty phase hearing continues today for a convicted of killing two people. prosecutors wants death penalty for nathan barris. he threatened to kill them after he fired them. back in 2008, he sent a letter

to barris's former girlfriend, debra ann ross warning he may be a threat to her. those fears proved to be true on august 11th, 2009, that's when authorities say barris shot ross who was a toll take and are shot and killed her friend. an ancient fossilized tooth that was dug up is on display at the academy of sciences. a train operator found that tooth just two months ago. it was buried about 110 feet deep. they think that tooth is from an ice age columbian mammoth which lived between 8 and 150,000 years ago. they're trying to figure out how old it may be. 5:18 is the time. the commute could be a little interesting as well with the rain overnight. you're in contra costa county looking at that area sal. >> that's right, we're looking at highway 4 to start off this report and highway 4 traffic is going to be a little bit slow

in some areas already in antioch but not in bay point yet as you drive west to concord. bart should be a nice ride for you. we'll tell you more about the bart system in just a moment. let's move along and take a look at the commute westbound on the bay bridge. this traffic looks pretty good with no major problems. i want to mention the traffic coming into the san francisco on the bridge itself also looks good and if you are driving in san jose northbound 101 and 280 traffic that's looking pretty good this morning and no major problems right now on 87. let's go back to rosemary orozco. good morning to you, it's going to be cool and damp for your friday, a view of the satellite radar, thunderstorms rumbled through the overnight hours and have pushed into the valley for the most part. just a few scattered showers over parts of south bay, and a

few light showers reported over e 880 as well as 680 along the east bay shoreline. we have fremont boulevard, all reporting a little bit of light rain down into areas near san martin, gilroy, morgan hill. now, because the rain isn't falling in your area doesn't mean you will not find trouble on the roadway. expect a little bit of flooding out there this morning. i know i ran into some trying to move through oakland at times. now, giving you a view of the sierra. we continue with the advisory here. snow levels down to about 2500 feet actually here at home some of our higher elevations could pick up a dusting of snow. the winter weather advisory for the sierra will last through the morning hours looking at 5 to 10 inches of snowfall. meanwhile at home, upper 50s, lower 60s for the forecast in the afternoon. it's going to be a cool day and cool morning. numbers are down anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees from yesterday

morning. your weekend in view here showing you we will run cool for your weekend. upper 50s, low 60s with mainly dry conditions for the afternoon. get into monday, slightly warmer and then tuesday, the next possibility of showers will arrive. it's a chilly start out there this morning, i'll have a look at your current temperatures coming up. all the major european markets are down right now many by more than 1% as investors worry about slow or no growth in the global economy. in the far east, they finished the day with losses overnight. analysts say that's over worries about u.s. fiscal policy. we've been talking about that and how it will affect the asian economy. japan and hong kong lost nearly 1% each. futures are down this morning across the board for the nasdaq, s&p 500 and follows a down day yesterday. still below 13,000, the dough

. welcome back, tourism may go up in colorado and washington state because they now have new marijuana laws. voters passed those laws this week legalizing the recreational use of marijuana. some advocates are saying these new laws may attract more marijuana smokers to those states. there's still questions about the legality of the new laws though. federal government still examining that entire issue. san francisco's newly appointed catholic archbishop has ignited controversy in theless bee yan, gay --

pavement led to the one car crash. it's on its roof. the driver we're told was not seriously hurt. in the meantime interstate 880 is back open after there was a major accident in fremont. several cars were involved. one man was sent to the hospital. ktvu's tara moriarty is in fremont with the details on how the weather added to this wreck. >> reporter: well, officials say that the rain slicked roads definitely played a role in this accident. we're here on 880 northbound, this is right near the mission boulevard exit. you can see traffic back to normal now but at 2:00 in the morning it certainly didn't look this way. the chp says it appears the person driving a white saturn had a solo spin out and slammed into the median at 2:00 this morning. then the driver of a silver suv smashed into the sat earn. the driver of the saturn was found outside the car. it's not known if he was

ejected. he suffered a massive head injury and is reportedly in critical condition. they issued a sig alert. and ran several traffic breaks for two hours. everything is back open. another reminder of why you need to slow down. give yourself extra time this morning and the rain out here, it has started to drizzle again. we expect these roadways to be wet once again soon. live from fremont i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. the bad weather is causing problems for some people in san francisco. it's believed that lightning may have knocked out three separate transformers near hoffman, fountain and grand view. pg&e about 100 customers are still without power. still no estimate on when the power will be restored. back east, new jersey governor chris christie says power should be returned to sandy victims by sunday but utilities say it might take another week to help tens of

thousands of customers who lost power during this week's nor'easter and there's a new gas rationing system in new york to limit long lines like you're looking at there. drivers can only fill up every other day. police are at the gas stations enforcing the plan. it looks like the skies are a little friendlier this morning. flights are on time at sfo. no ground delays at any of the airports. there were storm related cancellations yesterday but much fewer than the day before. two bay area high technology experts are being considered by president obama as replacements for treasure secretary timothy geigner. eric smith and facebook chief operating officer cheryl sandburg are on the list of possibilities for treasury secretaries. president obama appointed schmidt to his council of advisors on science and

technology sandberg previously serve z add chief of staff at the treasury department. sandberg would become the first female treasury secretary if e elected. in other news, chris stevens, the late u.s. ambassador to libya was honored with a post hue mouse award last night in washington dc hillary clinton served words last night. >> chris stevens was an inspiration to all who knew him during his life. >> earned the common ground award for peace building. his sister ann was there accepting the award on his behalf. chris stevens grew up right here in the bay area was killed along with three other americans in a terrorist attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi on september 11th. happening right now, people are camped out at the sacred heart community service in san

jose. why people are camped out even though it's raining and cold, janine de la vega. >> reporter: it's been cold and wet. they've been huddled together out here not getting too much sleep. we're told the first person was waiting here since 11 yesterday morning. they're here in front of sacred heart community services. they're in line to make sure to register to receive help for the holidays. this line of people stretches all the way down the block. we counted about 150 people in line camped out on the wet sidewalk. some with their young children. at 7:30. sacred heart community service will hand out tickets they expect to register 4000 people that want food boxes. the majority of people in line are not homeless. they're just struggling to make ends meet living in an expensive city. >> it's too hard for me. i'm a single mother.

i have four kids. i want to but it's too hard for me because i don't have somebody to help me. >> yesterday volunteers were unloading crates of donated food at the nonprofit but with thanksgiving two weeks away, sacred heart is in desperate need for more donations. we are told by the director that they have four frozen turkeys. besides food they're looking for toys for kids of all ages. that's because they're going to be handing out 16,000 toys. they want to get 3 toys for each kid and as far as food, some of these people are not going to be turning any away if they want donated holiday food r for christmas but where they have o to make the cut off is for toys. they're going to be giving out toys to 4000 kids. that's what's very important for these kids so their children can have a happy holiday. reporting live from san jose,

janine de la vega,. a list of fire stations that will be closed will be released from contra costa county will be released at the end of the month. now, officials met with county supervisors yesterday talking about which of the department's 28 stations will be closed. on tuesday, a parcel tax failed to get the 2/3 vote needed to pass that parcel tax would have filled a 16 million-dollar budget deficit. police in san francisco are trying to figure out what led up to the death of a man during the giants world series celebration. the man told his roommate he was attacked but police say he could have been hurt by his own doing. coming up at 5:45, hear why his roommate says those claims just don't add up. drivers will have to be patient as they travel through what many call the south bay's worst freeway interchange. a ground breaking ceremony is scheduled at 10:00 this morning to improve the interstate

280/880 interchange. crews will work on the stevens creek boulevard overpass and add another route into the valley fair from 880. there will also be a flyover ramp linking 880 to 280. the $62 million project will be finished in 2018. did you r hear the wind and the hail? >> it did not wake me up. >> sal knows about the commute and i know you're watching the east bay. >> that hail really came down in the east bay and i think that's why you heard it. it was hailing in oakland and many areas and the roads were wet. we're going to start with 880 and even though it's not raining now, you can definitely tell the roads are still wet. you heard tara say it was beginning to drizzle and fremont, and giving yourself is a smart idea. on the san mateo bridge,

traffic is moving along well and it is still wet on the way over to the peninsula. in the caster valley, livermore, all those freeways starting off pretty well so far getting over to the hayward area. the 880 southbound, talking about a little bit wet there and no problems on the peninsula, 101 or 28. let's go to rosemary. i had the hail pounding of my rooftop this morning. here's the ban and into the east bay and off into the valley getting ready to move into the sierra. so the sierra continues with an advisory here at home we are actually mainly dry at the moment. it looks like the south bay picking up a few scattered showers at that time. we are watching a little bit of light to moderate rainfall over morgan hill and gilroy. and continue to watch a few light showers over fremont and tara can verify that for us. we are watching rain and snow mix over the higher elevations

as well. we'll have to see how that actually comes out a little bit later today and through the weekend. your look at satellite radar, you can see the sierra not seeing a whole lot. you will need the chains or snow tires getting over the past on i-80 with the advisory lasting until 10:00 for the lope and the foothills it's going to last until 4:00 if you plan on getting away for the weekend. at home, scattered showers will remain in the forecast, will be mixed with the possibility of sunshine out there. we will continue with the cooling afternoon highs for today will be cooler than yesterday. through the weekend, very cold mornings and afternoon highs will run cool as well. speaking of cold, let's check in at these temperatures. mid 30s at santa rosa. mid-40s oakland, mid-40s down into the south bay. afternoon highs, 50s to 60s. be prepared, bring along the jacket. you may need it all weekend

mid-30s to mid-40s. welcome back, time 5:44. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you. we had an overnight storm in the bay area. it's blamed for several accidents including a big one in fremont. that saturn spun out, slammed into a median on interstate 880. a silver suv came and crashed right into that car. the driver of the saturn was rushed to the hospital reportedly in critical condition. in just a couple of hours, these people you see here, they can register for free holiday food boxes and christmas toys. they're lined up camped out at the sacred heart community service in san jose. organizers expect about 4000 people to show up. the doors will be opening at 7:30. and later this morning president obama will make his first address to the nation since being ree elected. he'll -- ree reelected.

he'll try to avoid the fiscal cliff. that's a combination of automatic tax hikes and massive spending cuts. new this morning, u.s. lawmakers are said to be working on new sanctions aimed at blocking iran from doing business with more of the world, most of the world that is, it is the latest development in the stand off of irans nuclear program. it would target agricultural, industrial and consumer goods by iran. that could cripple the functioning o of iran's economy which is reeling from previously imposed sanctions on the oil exports. the united nations says the number of people needing help could be 4 million by the end of the year. and a failure to end the fighting could lead to people leaving nearby countries. back here in the bay area, people who live on treasure island should plan for more

let him go. >> while police continue to investigate the death they're looking at it as suspicious. san francisco's universal health care program is being expanded to include sex change surgery. the idea is to help transgender people who are uninsured and in crisis about their gender identity. this new program would cover the cost of reassignment surgery if it is medically necessary. the transgender health initiative should be established by late next year. it is the day that many of the world's top surfers have been waiting for, the window for the mavericks invitational surf contest opens today. it gives contestants 24 hours notice to arrive in half-moon bay to surf some of the largest waves. it has not been held for the past two years because the big waves never materialized. the waiting period goes through march 31st. no more waiting on sal.

fire near los angeles. this started at 3:30 not far from the burbank airport. the firefighters say it's too dangerous to try to get inside to fight the flames so they're trying to put it out from outside and you can see it's still burning. the store has lost it's roof. it's looking like a total loss. we have not heard of any injuries. look at what's happening, the flare ups right there, no injuries yet and we're still not sure what caused the fire. back here in the bay area it's not clear if weather caused a crash in oakland not too long ago. this car we're showing you slammed into a tree on highway 13 near the broadway terrace onramp. pretty bad. it was completely smashed up. emergency crews got there and had to extricate two people who were inside. the victims were taken to highland medical center for treatment. the board president of the maraga school district abruptly resigned less than a day after
